Scott Honda of West Chester

For 25 Years Contributing To Our Growth and Success

We give a heartfelt congratulations to Ute Heller on her 25th Anniversary with Scott Honda.

Ute, you are such a valuable member of our organization, and you contribute to the success of our team year after year.  It’s an important milestone, and we’re excited to celebrate your career. Happy anniversary; we appreciate you!

Since joining our team in 1998, Ute has grown right alongside the company. She is a respected colleague to us all, and a leader in her role as Dealership Office Manager.  We took a moment to ask her a few questions about her quarter-of-a-decade tenure here…

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to be a veterinarian. I love all animals, especially my own! But after visiting a vet clinic, I realized I couldn’t handle seeing so many animals sick or in pain.

UteHeller

How did you get started in the automotive industry?

I first moved to the States for my husband’s work and we traveled back and forth between Oklahoma, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and my home country, never quite settling down long enough to start my career. But once we settled in Pennsylvania, I was hired by an RV dealership to do accounting work and train as a title clerk.

What drew you to Scott Auto Group originally? And how has Scott Auto Group changed since?

I’ll be honest— like many people on the hunt for a new job, I was looking for better pay and benefits. And Scott Auto ticked those boxes for me! But the biggest factor in my decision was the dealership’s reputation as a great place to work. I had heard the company was small, operating like a close-knit family. And that drew me in; being away from home, while my husband started his own business, I wanted that kind of atmosphere and culture in my work environment. The team has remained like a family, it’s just grown in size 🙂

What do you enjoy most about working with Scott Auto Group?

Simply, the people. Mutual respect is important to me. And I’m thankful to work with a team that truly cares about one another’s personal and professional lives.

Who or what are some of your major influences at work?

All of my team members— I can’t pick just one! I’ve learned so much from everyone, be it from my own department or a different location altogether. Just by observing and communicating with my coworkers, I get to see how we each live out our core values day to day. Our differences make working together to achieve a common goal even more special.

What do you think makes our team culture unique?

We want each other to succeed. Our team is focused on growth, both personal and professional. We grow and we adapt. We’re huge advocates for cross-training, myself included. I find it rewarding to teach others how to do my job. And it gives me peace of mind knowing that all bases in the company are covered.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Travel more! Even though I’ve done my fair share of traveling, it never feels like it’s enough. Before you know it, you feel like you’ve run out of time because there’s just so much to see and experience!

A Simple Explanation for Understanding Your Honda’s Maintenance Codes

A yellow wrench symbol pops up on your dashboard. Uh oh, you’re probably thinking, that can’t be good. That’s totally understandable— a dashboard alert light is prone to make anyone feel somewhat anxious. But at Scott Honda, we know knowledge is power. And we want to share that knowledge with you, so you can confidently handle your vehicle’s maintenance.

Our Service Advisors are here to help you understand what this wrench means each time it turns on, and the Maintenance Minder codes behind that symbol. Here are a few things you should know…

The Wrench is There to Help You

There’s a wrench in every toolbox for a reason. And just as a physical wrench will help you fix your leaky faucet, your Honda’s wrench light will help you keep your vehicle in optimal condition. Keeping up with routine maintenance is important and cost-effective. But it can be difficult to remember what services your Honda needs, and when. To help vehicle owners know when scheduled maintenance is due, Honda has introduced the maintenance minder system

This system consists of moving sensors all throughout your car. Compare it to your body’s nervous system. Every sensation you feel is carried back up to your brain, and your brain determines if the sensation is positive, negative, or neutral. In your Honda, an onboard computer system monitors the car in the same way, and reports any issues or need for service back as an alert through your dashboard.

The Maintenance Minder varies by the driver. Everyone’s driving habits are different. It adjusts maintenance intervals based on engine operation, driving habits, and climate. Plus, each vehicle has its own maintenance needs, so Honda develops specific maintenance schedules based on model equipment. The Maintenance Schedule calculates service needs based on your car’s mileage. It checks engine-operating conditions and helps coordinate oil service dates and other maintenance check-ups. The Maintenance Minder system empowers you to prevent problems before they occur.

When your car recognizes it’s time for service, that’s when the wrench icon appears. But how do you know which specific service it needs?  You may use the handy reference sheet below to understand any codes that pop up along your drive.

Maintenance Minder Codes and Subcodes,  Broken Down

The main Maintenance Minder codes are indicated by letters, A and B. The main codes are specific to users and triggered based on your Honda’s operating condition, while sub-codes are based on past maintenance schedules.  The subcodes are denoted by numbers, 1-7.

There are two main codes you need to take note of. When main code A is displayed, you have to replace the engine oil. However, when main code B is displayed, you must do a full servicing. In addition to the oil change, you’ll need to replace the oil filter, inspect front and rear brakes, as well as check the parking brake adjustment. You may also need to examine other items specific to your Honda.

Six subcodes come with the Honda Maintenance Minder. Subcode 1 indicates that your tires need to be rotated. Subcode 2 tells you to replace the Air Cleaner Element, check the drive belt, and replace the dust/pollen filter. Subcode 3 indicates you need to replace the transmission fluid. Subcode 4 suggests that you should replace the spark plugs and timing belt and inspect the water pump and valve clearance. Subcode 5 is a sign that you need to replace the water coolant, while subcode 6 will tell you to replace the differential fluid.

Our expert technicians read these codes to give attention to those areas of your Honda that have a precise service need as indicated by its onboard computer system. This computer system continuously monitors engine operating conditions such as engine temperature, ambient temperature, vehicle use, speed, and time. This system ensures regular, routine maintenance is being performed, thus guaranteeing peak performance for your vehicle. Plus, it saves you time and money by preventing unnecessary service!

Because They Empower You as a Decision Maker and Encourage Trust in our Service Center.

Our cars are “arguably one of the most-loved things” we own so it only makes sense that choosing the right mechanic is as personal as picking a doctor. There’s many reasons why our cars mean so much to us. Most obviously, cars give us freedom— the freedom to jump behind the wheel and drive wherever, whenever you want, blasting your favorite song with the windows down. Plus, cars have personalities; they often elicit an emotional response in us, and can even become a facet of our identity. Sometimes when we drive our cars long enough, it feels like they’re a part of us. This is why being a car owner is exciting. And we want that excitement to last.

It’s no secret that a well-maintained vehicle gives us reliability, improved performance, longevity, and higher resale value. But as cars are becoming increasingly complex, we car owners can certainly benefit from a trusted advisor when it comes to maintaining such sophisticated machines. That’s why our Honda technicians are continually trained on new technology in order to perform multi-point inspections that evaluate your car’s intricate systems and offer you money-saving recommendations.

Why is the Multi-Point Inspection Important at Every Visit?

Just like we need wellness visits, our cars also need these regular check-ups. And as a doctor would perform a physical exam, a Honda certified technician performs a multi-point inspection (MPI) for your vehicle.

An MPI is a thorough inspection of your vehicle’s critical systems including the interior, exterior, underbody, and engine. We like to call these “vehicle report cards” because they report to you on those systems and parts that are in good shape, those that need attention soon, and those parts that could “fail” and become a larger, more costly issue without immediate replacement.

It’s better to catch a minor problem early on to avoid major repairs. Many of these maintenance issues may be trickier for an owner to notice, like worn-out brakes or irregular tread wear beginning on the inside of your tires.

Beyond ensuring your safety, this “vehicle report card” also grants you extra time to act preventatively, or plan ahead and budget for a major repair.

What Does the Multi-Point Inspection Include?

Our multi-point inspection covers a lot of ground. From the general exterior of a vehicle, down to its battery, a technician will examine each part and rate it using a simple scale on the comprehensive MPI report that is presented to you during each service visit.

A color-coded, checkmark system makes your report easy to understand so that you can confidently make decisions with the help of your Advisor.

  • Green indicates the part is working properly.
  • Red indicates the part that needs immediate attention.
  • Yellow indicates the part will need to be replaced soon.

There are two main components of the exam: the road test and the bay/lift check. To perform the road test, a technician will briefly drive the vehicle to check and score the following:

  • Tire noise or vibration
  • Braking performance
  • Vehicle handling (including suspension noise and Powertrain performance)
  • Dashboard lights & Check Engine Light status
  • Parking brake
  • Clutch operation

And during the bay/lift check, the vehicle will be examined in a technician’s workstation, where they may raise the vehicle on a car lift to inspect the following:

  • Battery
  • Exterior lighting (headlights, brake lights, and hazards)
  • Mirrors
  • Horn
  • Windshield wipers
  • Condition of all fluids (oil, brake, power steering, etc.), and signs of leaking
  • Belts and hoses
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Exhaust system

Each tire’s tread depth will be rated, as well as their wear patterns. Additionally, each brake pad and rotor will be inspected and scored using the same scale.

We Want to Be Your Trusted Advisor. The Multi-Point Inspection is One Way We Earn Your Confidence.

Trust is a big deal to us at Scott Honda. We know that it takes consistency and transparency to gain your trust. We offer you multi-point inspections at every visit because we want to become your trusted, knowledgeable Advisor, partnering with you in the preventative care and maintenance of your car.

And we get it— you want to get back on the road and back to your life, free from worry. We want that, too. That’s why we hold so much value in an MPI. This inspection empowers you as the consumer to be the decision-maker, so there’s no stress or pressure.  It gives you a choice to act immediately and fix your car preventatively, or plan ahead and budget for an upcoming cost. We want to save you money in the long-run by catching issues sooner rather than later.

We value your time too. It only makes sense to recommend you choose to take a preventative measure while you’re already visiting our Service Center, than to have you leave your appointment with an impending problem that may arise on the most inconvenient day. Ultimately, the decision is yours. We’re simply here to advise.

We hope with our advice, you can drive away from your service appointment feeling confident, so you can simply turn the music up, roll your window down, and enjoy the road ahead.

“It is our pleasure to congratulate Scott Honda of West Chester on receiving the 2021 Honda Environmental Leadership Award! We appreciate your commitment to the environment.”

American Honda Motor Co., Inc

Our commitment to the environment extends beyond offering fuel-efficient vehicles. At Scott Honda, we are making specific choices for a healthier environmental impact, and we’re proud to have earned the designation as a Honda Green Dealer continuously these last seven years. Our Honda store has achieved verifiable and specific reductions in energy use at our large facility; therefore measurably reducing the environmental impact of our operations.

We achieved this initiative  by following guidelines from American Honda’s Green Dealer Program. Honda’s Green Dealer Consultants help assess over 30 areas for improvement. They help us understand what to do, and how to do it. Plus, they benchmark our operational practices through a scorecard. This scorecard assessment has been our roadmap for meeting energy usage targets and implementing their expert-recommended improvements. All in all, this has allowed us to build on prior year’s successes and measurably continue improvements since joining the efforts in 2015.

We’re thrilled our efforts have earned us an Environmental Leadership Award with an additional badge, the Water Badge, in 2021. The Water Badge is achieved through changes that can cut water consumption by 30-50%. Solutions include modern fixtures, smart irrigation systems and landscapes, alternative water sources, and closed loop systems that recycle water with no wastewater discharge.

2021 Honda Environmental Leadership Award, Scott Honda of West Chester

About Green Dealer Program

In 2012, Honda launched the Green Dealer Program to help U.S. dealerships reduce carbon emissions throughout their facilities. Since the launch, Honda dealers across the country have cumulatively saved approximately 174,000 tons of CO2e— that’s equivalent to eliminating over 21,000 homes’ energy use just in one year. And that’s not the only impressive “green” statistic; these dealers have saved approximately $34.5 million in energy costs.

As the program grows, the objective remains the same: measurably reducing energy consumption to align with Honda’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. And as more Environmental Leaders emerge in dealers, the closer we stride towards that goal.

We’re proudly reducing our environmental impact, thereby contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future. For more information on the Honda Environmental Leadership Program, visit Green Dealer Honda

Right now, we’re all searching for ways to save money, especially at the pump. Ride sharing and gas apps can help, for sure. Another easy way to save is to keep up with your vehicle’s routine maintenance. With well-maintained parts, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your gas mileage. A 4-wheel alignment in particular can be beneficial to you, your wallet, and your car.

What is a 4-Wheel Alignment?

During an alignment, a technician adjusts the suspension of a vehicle. This means the angles of the tires are adjusted, not just the wheels. With the correct alignment, tires meet the road with a smoother impact, increasing the longevity of the wheels and the vehicle itself. Consider a poor alignment like a mismatched pair of shoes. Wearing one shoe that’s taller than the other would make you feel unbalanced, unsteady. And continually wearing this uneven pair could lead to more problems as your joints and muscles work harder on one side of your body.

We recommended getting your wheels aligned at least once a year. And it’s definitely a good idea to have your alignment checked out if you hit a curb or pothole.

The Benefits of Alignment

Fuel Efficiency

If your alignment is off, your tires are fighting for balance on the road. And as a result, your engine is working twice as hard to keep your vehicle moving. Naturally, this burns more fuel. The correct alignment guarantees all tires will work cohesively so your engine will run as normal. And with an engine running smoothly, you’ll notice improved gas mileage and fuel efficiency.

Longer-Lasting Tires

Notice your tires wearing quicker than expected? It might be time to get your alignment checked. When a vehicle is suffering from poor alignment, the tires are working against each other to find balance. This causes the tread to wear unevenly and in some areas, lose its grip on the terrain. Getting your wheels aligned allows your tire tread to last longer, saving you from having to purchase a new set.

Avoid Future Repairs

Driving for extended periods of time with poor alignment may lead to more serious problems. A bad alignment puts extra stress on steering and suspension components. Each time you hit a bump in the road, your tires should act as a buffer to protect steering and suspension. But when those tires aren’t aligned properly, they can’t offer as much protection. Avoid potential costly repairs; get a 4-wheel alignment.

Smoother Ride

If your alignment’s off kilter, you’d notice. You’d feel it as you’re driving— your car may drift to one side or consistently shake or vibrate. It could be a bumpy ride. Alignment service guarantees a steadier, smoother ride for the driver and any passengers onboard.

Increased Safety

Driving on tires with worn down tread can be a safety concern. They need appropriate traction for better braking, especially on wet ground. Steering can also be affected, increasing the risk of losing control of the vehicle. A proper alignment will help maintain even tread and steering, keeping you and others out of harm’s way.

You may need an alignment if:

  • Your steering wheel shakes while driving
  • Your vehicle shakes while driving
  • Your vehicle drifts to the left or right while driving
  • You hit a pothole, speed bump, or a curb at a moderate speed
  • Your tires show uneven or excessive tread wear

Bring your car to Scott Honda through our Express Service lane for a tire inspection. We make maintenance and repairs easy! No appointment required.

Six Honda models have earned the Insurance for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick rating or better. Five of the six have achieved the highest award, the Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+)!

2022 Honda Civic

Top Safety Pick+

  • 2022 Honda Accord
  • 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback
  • 2022 Honda Civic Sedan
  • 2022 Honda Insight
  • 2022 Honda Odyssey

Top Safety Pick

  • 2022 Honda CR-V, when equipped with specific headlights

Safety First

Contributing to the top ratings, each of the six models achieved the highest possible rating of “GOOD” in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests. In addition, all models feature Honda Sensing®, earning them “SUPERIOR” ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle frontal crash prevention. Honda Sensing® is now available or standard in all Honda models and offers these comprehensive safety features:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Pedestrian Detection
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
  • Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

All Honda vehicles also benefit from Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which is designed to protect occupants in various frontal collisions. Plus, ACE™ offers advanced supplemental restraint systems, such as pre-tensioning front seatbelts and front, side, knee, and side-curtain airbags.

Scoring Guidelines

To earn the 2022 TSP award, a vehicle must earn the highest rating, “GOOD,” in all crash tests. A top-rated vehicle must also offer front crash prevention that earns an “ADVANCED” or “SUPERIOR” rating in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian testing, as well as “GOOD” or “ACCEPTABLE” ratings for available headlights. TSP+ rated vehicles must achieve the same “GOOD” or “ACCEPTABLE” rating for their standard headlights.

Separately, every 2022 Honda model that has been fully evaluated in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) test has received a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score.

What is the IIHS?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.1

In 1992, IIHS opened the Vehicle Research Center. This state-of-the-art facility is where IIHS performs the crash tests that form the basis of its widely consulted vehicle ratings. VRC tests help consumers make informed decisions. Vehicles are rated for safety based on performance in several tests, and the best performers carry the TOP SAFETY PICK+ or TOP SAFETY PICK designation. IIHS tests have encouraged automakers to produce safer vehicles, which is the ultimate goal.1

Keeping our Community Safe

The Dealer of the Year Awards indicate the value car shoppers place on dealers’ adaptability to provide the very best service even when the industry is challenged by inventory shortages and increased car prices.

In the past few years, the automotive industry has changed drastically. What remains, however, is our commitment to our customers. By implementing and maintaining protocols like social distancing, masking, and sanitization, we’ve done well to keep our community safe. Plus, our Honda Brand Consultants have become experts at helping customers find their dream cars virtually! Digital features such as video chat, at-home delivery, and virtual walkarounds have played a huge role in generating positive reviews.

Engaging with Our Valued Guests

Guest feedback means so much to us. Reviews help us understand what we’re doing right, and what we could do better. We’re constantly learning and seeking opportunities for improvement. Engaging with our customers and responding to their reviews is one of our favorite ways to learn! And it seems we’re not the only ones who enjoy it… a shared habit of award-winning dealers is their quick review response rate, with 80% of award-winning dealers responding to customers at double the average response rate.1Additionally, about 75% of winners provide Employee Profile Pages on DealerRater, which allows customers to ask questions and connect with individual team members before ever stepping on the lot.1

DealerRater Award Methodology

The DealerRater Dealer of the Year Awards are presented annually to the top U.S. and Canadian car dealers with 25 or more reviews based on categories such as customer service, quality of work, friendliness, pricing and overall experience, key drivers of repeat and referral business. The scoring algorithm considers the dealership’s average DealerRater star rating as well as the total number of reviews written about the dealership during the 2021 calendar year. Consumer Satisfaction Awards are given to the top 10% of U.S. new-car dealers as well as independent and Canadian dealerships that earn at least 25 reviews and maintain a minimum average review rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 during the 2021 calendar year. See the full list of winners U.S. and Canada.

Third Time Our Honda Civic Wins This Award.

The all-new 2022 Honda Civic, the 11th generation of America’s most popular compact car, has earned the prestigious 2022 North American Car of the Year award. Civic was honored by the North American jury of automotive journalists for the third time, with the 10th-generation Civic winning in 2016 and 8th generation taking the top honor in 2006.

This is the fourth time in the past six years that one of our Honda models is recipient of a North American Car or Truck of the Year award.1  First to be awarded was the Honda Civic (2016), then our popular truck, the Honda Ridgeline (2017), and finally the Honda Accord (2018).

“The Honda Civic has long set the standard by which other compact cars are measured and this all-new Civic raised that bar in every conceivable way,” said Michael Kistemaker, assistant vice president of Honda national sales, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We’re especially proud for the Civic development team in Japan and our production associates at our plants in Greensburg, Indiana and Alliston, Ontario where the 2022 Civic Sedan, Hatchback and Si are built.”2
